It was the attic that drew me in. I had been exploring the old house when I found the dusty journal tucked away under a pile of forgotten books. The pages were yellowed with age, the ink faded, but the words, strangely, seemed to shift as I read them. I didn’t know what to make of it. My fingers traced the letters, and I could swear the words changed under my touch. Then, to my surprise, the page flipped, as if a wind had blown through the room. I turned around, but the window was closed. And that’s when I heard it. A soft whisper, like a voice from the past, filling the air around me.

The complication

  • The whisper becomes a clear voice that knows secrets about my family, forcing me to decide whether to keep reading or close the journal forever.
  • The pages begin to show scenes that start happening in the house, so the journal might be causing events instead of just describing them.
  • A shadowy figure appears at the attic door each time I touch the journal, and it grows bolder the more I read.

Sentence starters

  1. I crept closer, fingers hovering over the trembling page as if the paper might burn.
  2. The air in the attic tasted of dust and old wood, and a warm, uneasy silence wrapped around me.
