Lila had always been fascinated by her grandmother’s old attic. It was filled with strange contraptions, clocks, and mysterious gadgets she couldn’t understand. But on one rainy afternoon, while exploring the forgotten corners of the dusty room, she found something that would change everything. Among the piles of old books and bibs and bobs, she uncovered a glowing device, its clock face flickering in the dim light. As she held it, the gears around her began to spin, and the air felt charged with a strange energy. Her grandmother’s secret, she realised, had something to do with time itself.

The complication

  • The glowing device begins to rewind small moments around Lila, making objects and memories disappear unless she can control it.
  • Someone from the neighbourhood, perhaps a rival antique collector, senses the device’s power and arrives to steal it, forcing Lila to hide or protect the secret.
  • The device opens a door to another time and Lila is pulled through, leaving her grandmother’s attic behind and needing to find a way back.

Sentence starters

  1. Suddenly the clock face brightened and Lila felt the floor hum beneath her feet.
  2. Lila crouched by the device and prised open a tiny panel, fingers trembling as she searched for a switch.
