Elara had always dreamed of flying, but she never imagined it would happen like this. One minute, she was feeding the stable horses, and the next, she found herself soaring through the clouds, gripping the reins of a magnificent pegasus. Below her, an incredible kingdom appeared, floating high above the world. Shimmering castles, flowing waterfalls, and glowing lanterns sparkled in the sunlight. But as Elara gazed in awe, she realised the kingdom seemed to be fading, and she knew she had to act fast to save it.

The complication

  • The pegasus loses strength and begins to sink toward a lower, dangerous layer of clouds before Elara can reach the kingdom, forcing her to find a way to help the creature and still save the floating realm.
  • A guardian of the kingdom mistakes Elara for an intruder and seals parts of the city with spells, so Elara must prove she means no harm while racing to stop the fading.
  • The source of the kingdom’s light is a cracked crystal hidden below the tallest tower, and removing or repairing it requires Elara to navigate collapsing bridges and jealous sky-spirits who do not want the kingdom restored.

Sentence starters

  1. Suddenly, Elara tightened her grip on the reins as the pegasus dove toward a patch of rotten cloud.
  2. Elara pulled the pegasus back and kicked gently with her heels, urging it to climb higher.
