In a small, forgotten corner of Maplewood Primary School, the old classroom was known for strange stories. Kids whispered tales of floating desks and chalk that wrote by itself. Today, however, the room was more than a story because a group of wide-eyed third graders were standing and staring at a mysterious sight. The lights were flickering and they made playful shadows, and the air seemed to crackle with a mix of excitement and fear. Suddenly, one brave girl named Tina stepped forward, and she moved to confront the levitating desk that seemed to beckon her closer. Little did they know, the classroom held secrets waiting to be uncovered, and Mia was about to embark on an adventure unlike any other.

The complication

  • The levitating desk suddenly shoots across the classroom and traps Tina and Mia behind a wall of floating books, making it hard for them to reach a clue on the floor.
  • The chalk begins writing a warning in hurried letters, but the message is incomplete and the missing words seem to vanish into thin air.
  • A hidden door in the cupboard creaks open and a cold draft reveals a set of glowing footprints leading down to an underground room that might be dangerous.

Sentence starters

  1. Suddenly, Tina reached out and grabbed the edge of the floating desk, feeling a cold tingle under her fingers.
  2. The classroom smelled of dust and chalk, and the shadows on the walls looked like tall, slow-moving trees.
