The sun dipped below the horizon. It cast a warm glow over the quiet street. Jane spotted a sleek black cat. The cat lay on her school bag. Its green eyes sparkled with mischief. A soft breeze rustled the leaves around the cat. The breeze made the moment feel almost magical. Curiously, she noticed a tiny note on its collar. The note shimmered faintly in the light. Jane felt her heart beat fast. She wondered if this cat was ordinary. She thought it might be a companion of a witch. She imagined an adventure about to begin.

The complication

  1. The cat runs off with Jane's school bag and the tiny note blows away, making it hard for Jane to find the message.
  2. Someone else appears and claims the cat belongs to them, creating a challenge for Jane to prove the cat is meant to be her companion.
  3. The note contains a riddle that leads Jane to a strange place at night, and she must decide whether to follow the clues alone or ask for help.
