Sophie had always loved books, but this one was different. It was an old book she found hidden in a second hand book shop, its cover worn and edges frayed. That night, as she opened its pages, she noticed something strange, small sparks of light began to flicker and dance from the words. The more she read, the brighter the lights became, until the words on the pages started to move. Sophie’s heart raced. Was this magic?

The complication

  • The moving words begin to lift off the page and float through the room, carrying Sophie’s favourite bookmark with them.
  • A shadowy figure appears inside the book’s story and tries to step into Sophie’s world, threatening to take the magic for itself.
  • The lights growing from the pages start to fade unless Sophie solves a riddle hidden in the book before sunrise.

Sentence starters

  1. Suddenly Sophie clutched the book tighter as a warm glow lifted from the page.
  2. Sophie ran a finger along the moving words and felt a tiny buzz against her skin.
