As the golden candlelight flickered across the towering shelves, I felt the weight of centuries pressing in. The library was silent, yet it was alive with an ancient magic. In the centre of the room, resting on a pedestal, lay the oldest book in existence. Its leather-bound cover shimmered with golden symbols. Hovering protectively over the book was a magnificent lion with wings of light. Its eyes glowed with a fierce, unwavering focus. It was the guardian of the book. I could not help approaching it slowly, as if it might speak to me and I wondered whether I was worthy.

The complication

  1. The winged lion will only allow someone to touch the book if they complete a challenge that tests a personal fear or secret.
  2. Another seeker arrives and tries to steal the book, forcing me to choose between fighting, hiding the book or bargaining with the guardian.
  3. The book begins to whisper and its words start to change the library around me, pulling me into a story that I cannot easily leave.

Sentence starters

  1. Suddenly I reached out a hand because my curiosity would not let me stay still.
  2. I crept forward, my fingers grazing the air where the lion’s golden light hummed like warm honey.
